Pinotage, The Next Decade
published on:

The Absa Top 10 Pinotage selection 2006 was announced yesterday in Cape Town, marking the competition’s tenth year of existence.

Forty-eight wines were entered in the inaugural competition in 1997 while 2006 saw 130 wines submitted, of which 22 were first-time entries.

Pinotage pioneer Beyers Truter spoke of ‘the next decade’ for this homegrown variety saying that it would stylistically consist of wines with ‘classic balance’. Alluding to the current backlash by consumers and the wine trade in the wake of ever-higher alcohols, Truter said, ‘Pinotage can produce excellent wines between 13.5% and 14.5% alcohol.'

He announced short-term initiatives of the Pinotage Association, with the generous and sustained financial support of Absa Bank, would include a local generic Pinotage ‘show', an Absa Top 10 Pinotage Pocket Guide aimed at wine tourists, and overseas road shows.
